DWP

Department for Work and Pensions

The government department now responsible for adult skills policy and for apprenticeships in England.

In full

Responsibility for adult skills policy transferred from the Department for Education to the Department for Work and Pensions on 16 September 2025, and a Machinery of Government change also transferred responsibility for apprenticeships to DWP. Adult Skills Fund money is now paid by the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, and DfE continues to implement the fund on DWP's behalf.

On GOV.UK, DWP publishes the apprenticeship funding rules and Free Courses for Jobs, and publishes the Adult Skills Fund funding rules and rates jointly with DfE. Skills England sits within DWP. 16 to 19 funding stays with DfE.
